Používatelia sa často dostávajú k papierovým dokumentom, ktoré treba premeniť na elektronické. Často sa potom využíva taký postup, že pomocou softvéru ku skeneru sa dokumenty zdigitalizujú do formátu PDF a takto uložia do archívu. Nie vždy je však predloha PDF vhodná pre špecifické potreby používateľov. Na úpravu zmlúv alebo rôznych podkladov, ktoré boli doručené faxom či poštou v papierovej forme, je vhodné mať ich v inej podobe. ABBYY FineReader dokáže dokumenty najrôznejších formátov previesť do editovateľnej podoby. Na tento účel je použitá špeciálna technológia s názvom Adaptive Document Recognition Technology, ktorá má za úlohu okrem rozpoznania textu zachovať aj jeho rozvrhnutie.
FineReader sa dokáže integrovať aj do balíka programov Microsoft Office, a tak sme bez problémov mohli priamo konvertovať do editovateľnej formy napríklad e-mailové správy, ktoré boli kombinované s textami v grafickej podobe.
Výhodou je, že pri práci s textom sa jazykové mutácie automaticky rozpoznávajú a slovenčina je plne podporovaná. Tie znaky, pri ktorých mohla nastať nejaká chyba, prípadne si program nie je celkom istý konverziou, sú označené a pred finálnym uložením do výsledného formátu sa dajú opraviť manuálne. Pri našich skúškach boli aj napriek príznaku označenia konkrétne znaky rozpoznané správne.
